1st Roller Set since my Big Chop

To start off I NEVER style my hair, I do a Wash 'n Go everyday b/c I'm lazy, don't know how to braid, my arms get tired easily & I'd rather do something that I actually feel like doing. But anyway I was inspired by ShellyBean729 to do a roller set on my hair yesterday & I think it would of turned out good if it weren't for a few things that messed it up, which I'll explain later.

Sectioning

After washing my hair I parted it into 5 sections with a rat tail comb & pinned them down with hair clips.
Products Used

All I used to roller set my hair were: a spray bottle filled with water 'n conditioner, EcoStyler gel, a wide tooth comb, hair clips & rollers.

This is what my hair looked like after taking a tiny section from out of my hair clips, spraying some water on it, rubbing some EcoStyler threw it & combing over it with the wide tooth comb.

The Rollers

The front section turned out the best b/c it was so small & I actually had some energy while doing it.

The sides came out loose b/c the rollers couldn't get tight enough around my short hair.

The back came out really bad, not only b/c I was really tired by then & couldn't see what I was doing, but also b/c my dryer didn't heat it up like it was supposed to.

When I was done putting the rollers in I put a plastic cap over my head & sat under my dryer.

It turned out that after sitting under my dryer for 2 hours & checking on my hair it hadn't dried the back of my hair at all!! The sides & front were mostly done, so I didn't bother sitting for another hour + the dryer started to over heat & stink, so I guess I'll need to buy a new dryer if I ever want to heat style my hair again.
Results

As I said before that front turned out great & the EcoStyler gel made my hair have a nice shine/glow to it.

The back had a lot of frizz & I'm glad I had no where important to go this weekend or I would of been embarrassed.

Final Thoughts: Even though my hair came out half done & I found out I needed a new dryer, I'm happy I tried to do this & do like the way the front came out + when I woke up this morning w/o wrapping my hair, it still looked the same & I had no frizz or messed up curls. Def. might do this again when I have a new dryer & free time.

June Length Check!!

I finally took some pictures of my hair while measuring it this time, so for now on you all will be able to see the difference in length when I do my length checks instead of just comparing the inches. My last length check was in April, so lets see how much my hair has grown since then =D

Front

Last time the front of my hair was 5inchs & now it's 6inchs

Left Side

Last time the left side of my hair was 4inchs & now it's 5inchs

Right Side

Last time the right side of my hair was 4inchs & now it's 6inchs

Back

Last time the back of my hair was 4inchs & now it's 6inchs

I think doing a length check every 2 months is really good for everyone b/c we see our hair everyday & can't really tell if it got longer etc. unless we compare it to old pictures or measure it. I'm excited to see that my hair is 6inchs now especially since it was only 3inchs when I did the big chop. IDK why the left side of my hair is growing slow, but maybe it'll catch up by the time of my next length check.

My Hair Regimen

DAILY:
I spritz my hair with a spray bottle filled with water & conditioner, then rub gel through my hair. At night I sleep with a satin pillow case & sometimes wrap my hair in a turban with a silk scarf. Before bed I M&S (moisture & seal) with coconut oil.

WEEKLY:
Once a week I shampoo my hair with Mixed Chicks shampoo. Condition with Hello Hydration. *planning on switching to Tresemme Naturals, when I run out* Then DC (deep condition) with the same conditioner for 30 minutes to an hour, then rinse out.
Shake hair, pat till damp with cotton T-shirt (doesn't frizz or snag hair & soaks up water 90% faster) Add leave-in conditioner & then style with gel.

MONTHLY:
Dust my ends my self & every couple of months give them a good trim if they need it. I also might do a Hot Oil treatment.

If I ever change my products you can always see them here, my old TWA regimen can be found here & if you want a more detailed description of how I wash my hair you can go here.

My Wash Routine

I took some pictures of my hair while I was washing it yesterday b/c I want to make sure I have some pictures for when I make my 1 year natural video in September, so since I have them I thought it'd be a good idea to tell ya'll my wash routine =)

Before I wash my hair I don't do anything to it, I just make sure that I take off my headband or any other accessories I might be wearing. I don't wash my hair in the sink, I always do it while I'm in the shower once a week. I get my hair wet & let the water run through my hair until it's completely soaked & run my fingers through my hair while I'm under the water to help get rid of some of the build up.

Then I use a quarter size drop of my shampoo, rub it in my hands to warm it up, then rub it through my hair & focus on my roots. Once I rinse it out & repeat, that's when I try to finger detangle if I can & get rid of knots. After I rinse again, I use a palm full of my conditioner & rub it through my head. After it's all in my hair & I've finger detangled, I use my shower comb to make sure the conditioner is evenly distributed through all my strands.

After the conditioner has sat in my hair for about 3 minutes, I rinse it out & then add in my leave-in conditioner.

My hair with leave-in conditioner in it:

Once I add my leave-in conditioner to my hair, I get out of the shower & go through it in sections with a wide tooth comb.

My hair after being combed out with a wide tooth comb:

After I'm done going through my hair with the wide tooth comb, I go through it again in sections with my Denman brush to make sure all the strands of my hair were brushed & to get the ones that were missed.

My hair after being brushed with the Denman brush:

Once I've brushed my hair with my Denman brush, I'll either wait till the next day to style my hair or after it starts to get almost dry I'll add in some EcoStyler or IC gel.

My hair damp with gel in it:

And that's my Wash Routine =D If you want to know what products I use, I always post them on my Facebook page here.

Product Review: Mixed Chicks Shampoo

I've been needing some new shampoo b/c I'm almost out of my Agadir one & saw that my local BSS (Beauty Supply Store) had the Mixed Chicks Shampoo so I bought it today and have already tried it. 1st off for those who may not know "Mixed Chicks" is NOT just for people who're "mixed" it's for people with Curly, Wavy, or Kinky hair & btw I'm not mixed either =P Anyway I had no idea until I looked at their website that the shampoo I bought is their "Gentle Clarifying" shampoo b/c nowhere on the bottle did it say "Clarifying" or maybe I just skipped over it, IDK + my BSS didn't have their other shampoo in the White bottle.

Here are the Ingredients:
Water, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Tea Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamide MEA, Glycol Disterate, Panthenol, Avocado Oil, Silk Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Ginger (Zinglber Officinale) Extract, Malvasylvestris (Mallow) Extract, Borage (Borago Officinalis) Seed Oil, Cinnmidopropyl Trimonium Chloride, Polyqatermium 10, Allantoin, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, FD&C Yellow #5, FD&C Yellow #6.

My Thoughts: When I 1st poured some out into my hands the shampoo had a good consistency, it was thick but not too thick & had a light sweet fragrance that I can't really tell what it smelled like, Shea Butter maybe? Once I rubbed it through my wet hair it glided right through & wasn't stripping at all, but did leave my hair with that "clean" feeling that is sort of dry. Once I conditioned it though, there were no problems & my hair did feel a little softer after using it. I think it's a good shampoo for the price of $12 & next time will make sure to buy their Sulfate-Free shampoo since I didn't know they had one.

My Hair Story

I've been slacking on my Hair blogs lately, so I decided to tell y'all my whole hair story & how my hair journey began etc.

To start off my mom did all my relaxers when I was relaxed & I never got them at a salon b/c we didn't have the money for it; I never knew until I went on my hair journey that my mom was actually Over Processing my hair b/c she would always re-apply the relaxers for my new growth all over my head, instead of just on the new growth like you were supposed to. I remember that I always got one every 3 months & didn't really know what it was exactly, just that it made my hair straight & my mom said "Everybody gets them" so that's why I had to get them too.

I always had hair down to the middle of my back until one day when I was taking out some braids by myself for the 1st time, I accidentally cut my real hair while trying to cut off the weave & my hair was a little passed my ears after I looked in the mirror. Since my hair was so short my mom bought me a string ponytail & I wore that as a protective style for 2 years straight, then started wearing my hair out again after it was shoulder length (that was near the end of 9th grade I think).

Once I started wearing my own hair out again that's when I started looking up how to take better care of my hair, but didn't start taking really good care of it until 12th grade after I had dyed my hair Auburn for my 18th birthday & then dyed it back after 3 months b/c I didn't have the money to take care of it + that's also when I had to get my hair cut all the way up to my ears b/c of heat damage & b/c of a bad relaxer my mom gave me. That was March 10th, 2011 & when I finally started getting serious about getting healthy hair & doing research about natural hair after finding the website Nappturality I decided I was NEVER gonna get another relaxer ever again after that.

May 18th, 2011 is when I got a Mini Chop so my relaxed hair would grow out faster & so I could get rid of some of the damaged hair sucking up all my nutrients. Then I transitioned for 6 months & did the Big Chop at a salon & had a 3inch TWA. I found out what my hair type was after finding ShelleyBean729 on YouTube & my hair is 3c/4a.

I'm lazy with my hair + don't know how to braid, so I've done Wash 'n Goes with my natural hair everyday from the start of my BC. I have all my staple products & have been natural for almost a year now. I'm not a product junkie b/c I'm very frugal + don't have that much money I can spend. I'm not as crazy about hair as I was when I 1st began my hair journey b/c I feel like I have all the information I wanted to know/learn, I only go on the hair forms maybe once a week now just to look at other peoples blogs & see what's going on. My natural hair isn't a big deal to me anymore & it's just a regular part of my life now, as if I've been natural all my life LOL.

When I have time I'll write a blog about my Hair Regimen, but for now hope you enjoyed hearing my story =)

Hair dye top tips!

We now have a full range of Crazy Color semi-permanent hair dyes available in stores and on-line.  If you want to know how to get the best results here are Pulp staff and customers top tips   …

1. To achieve brightest possible colour use the dye over pre-lightened hair, bleached to the light yellow stage. (It's advisable to get a professional to do the bleaching to make sure you don’t damage your hair.) Using Crazy Colors over dark hair will have a ‘high-lighting’ effect making your hair shine the chosen colour; this is particularly effective with darker red and blue shades.

2. If you haven’t used a colour before always do a strand test before dying, this will help you work out the correct developing time achieve to the desired colour result.  Different hair types can have different results when using Crazy Colors, more porous hair will have a more vibrant result.

3. If you have thick/long hair get two bottles of dye, you don't want to make the mistake of running out of dye half way through! Don’t underestimate how much dye you will use.

4. Don’t worry if you do have dye left over, to maintain your colour for a longer period of time mix a pea sized amount of dye with your conditioner each time you wash your hair, this helps boost the colour with every wash!

5. If you have contrasting colours in your hair you might need to wash the different sections of your hair separately so they don’t mix with each other, also when the dye is on your hair roll up each coloured section into small food bags and secure to prevent colours mixing.

6. If you want the colour boosting once it’s dyed, dye it again on top of the previous layer adding a second coat, when the dye rinses off it should be as bright as a traffic light!

7. To keep your hair extra bright it may need re-dying once every 2 weeks, reds colours usually last the longest.

8. Apply hair dye to dry hair rather than wet in using a tint brush, making sure you apply the dye to really thin sections of hair, this will ensure you even coverage and a brighter result.

9. Once you’ve applied your colour, cover your hair with cling film or a colouring cap to prevent the dye from drying, you can also heat with a hair dryer which should help open cuticles allowing dye to take a better hold (be careful not to use it too hot as this can dry out dye as well as burning you)

10. To get a more intense colour leave dye on for a few hours or even overnight.  Crazy Colors are conditioning crèmes and without harmful chemicals that damage your hair, so can be left on for longer periods of time. (Skin Patch Testing is highly recommended before using any hair dye product. If a reaction occurs rinse off immediately and discontinue use.)

11. If Crazy Color doesn’t make the exact shade you want colours can be mixed together, just make enough to do your hair and a little extra as it will be hard to get same shade again for touching up roots etc. To achieve lighter or pastel shades mix colours with the ‘Neutral’ dye.

12. When mixing hair colours always be aware mixing colours from opposite sides of the colour wheel will counteract one another,  lilac shades can be used to tone down yellows, however dying green shades over reds may result in a murky colour.  Make sure you always do a strand test!

13. Don't use Baby Shampoo, Dandruff Shampoo or any other strong shampoos; they strip your colour, try and use a shampoo designed specifically for coloured hair.

14. Avoid washing your hair every day. Washing your hair with only small amounts of shampoo and rinsing with cool water will also help to prolong your colour .

15. Avoid using the straighteners every day, regular straightening/curling will cause your colour to fade quicker.
